Simplified Fable 63: De Vulpe in Puteo

Now that I have finished the Segmented Grammar Commentaries on the fables (see the Complete Fables List for links), I'll be working through the fables again, this time providing "Simplified" versions of the fables. So, here is today's Simplified fable - De Vulpe in Puteo, the story of the fox who tricked the goat into helping her to get out of a well.

The original version is as follows:

Vulpes et Caper sitibundi in quendam puteum descendebant. In quo cum perbibissent, Vulpes dixit circumspicienti reditum Capro, “Bono animo esto, Caper! Excogitavi etenim quo pacto uterque reduces simus.” Obtemperavit consilio Caper, et Vulpes, ex puteo prosiliens, prae gaudio in margine cursitabat. Ceterum, cum ab Hirco ut foedifraga incusaretur, respondit, “Enimvero, Hirce, si tantum tibi sensus esset in mente, quantum est saetarum in mento, non prius in puteum descendisses, quam de reditu exploravisses.”

Vulpes in margine putei cursitabat.

Vulpes, ex puteo prosiliens, prae gaudio in margine cursitabat.

Hircus Vulpem incusat:

"Foedifraga es!"

Hircus Vulpem ut foedifragam incusat.

Vulpes ab Hirco ut foedifraga incusatur.

Cum ab Hirco ut foedifraga incusaretur, Vulpes respondit:

"Hirce, multum saetarum tibi est in mento!"

"Sed multum sensus tibi non est in mente!"

"Tantum tibi sensus non est in mente, quantum est saetarum in mento."

"In puteum descendisti, sed de reditu non exploravisti."

"In puteum descendisti prius quam de reditu exploravisti."

“Si tantum tibi sensus esset in mente, quantum est saetarum in mento, non prius in puteum descendisses, quam de reditu exploravisses.”
